Delhi holiday list 2027: what an employer must give.

1. Three national holidays — Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti — have fixed dates, and almost every state’s holiday law names them.
2. The central government publishes its offices’ list for the next year, usually in the middle of the year. For 2027 it has 14 compulsory holidays, and three more that a committee in each state capital picks from a list of twelve.
3. Each state government notifies its own list for its offices, mostly between October and December for the next year.
4. A private employer follows its state’s holiday law — a Shops and Establishments Act, or a National and Festival Holidays Act. It fixes the national days and a number of festival holidays; the employer, the workers or the Inspector settle which festivals, depending on the state.
5. Restricted holidays are optional: the office stays open and each employee takes a set number of them. Central government staff in Delhi may take two of the 32 on the list.
6. Publish the year’s list to your team before the year starts, so leave and shifts can be planned around it.

State

Holidays are set state by state. Pick the state the employee works in — not where the company is registered — because the holiday law of the state the workplace is in is the one that applies there.

A company with offices in two states keeps two holiday lists.

National holiday

Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August) and Gandhi Jayanti (2 October). Their dates never move, and almost every state’s holiday law names all three as paid holidays for private employers too.

Gazetted holiday

A holiday on the list the central government publishes each year for its own offices (the Department of Personnel and Training’s list). Banks, courts and a private employer each follow their own rules, but many private employers start from this list.

Restricted holiday

An optional holiday. The office stays open, and each employee picks a set number of days from the list — central government staff may take two a year. A private employer that offers them decides how many.

Useful for festivals only some of your team keep.

State holiday

A holiday a state government declares for its own offices — a regional festival, the state’s formation day, or a local anniversary. States publish their list for the next year, mostly between October and December.

Festival holiday

A paid holiday beyond the national ones that a state’s law makes a private employer give. How many depends on the state; the employer usually picks which festivals and tells staff at the start of the year.

  India’s 2027 national holidays are Republic Day on Tuesday 26 January, Independence Day on Sunday 15 August and Gandhi Jayanti on Saturday 2 October. Central government offices close for 11 more in every state, and each state’s law fixes how many paid holidays a private employer gives — from 7 in Uttar Pradesh to 13 in Kerala.

• Karnataka holiday list 2027

  In Karnataka, the Karnataka Industrial Establishments (National and Festival Holidays) Act, 1963 makes a private employer — a shop or office as much as a factory — give 10 paid holidays a year: 26 January, 1 May, 15 August, 2 October and 1 November, and five festivals the employer picks after consulting employees.
