Can one person be on nights one month and days the next?
Yes. A shift is assigned from a date, so a change of rota is a new assignment and the old one stays in their history — each month is judged against the shift that applied to it.

Shifts with their own start and end, grace and working days — alternate Saturdays, a night rota past midnight — assigned to a person from a date. Lateness, half days, leave, overtime and loss of pay all follow the shift the person was on that day.

A shift
Its own hours and its own thresholds.
- A name, a code, a colour, a start and an end
- Its own grace period, and the minutes that make a half day and a full day
- Its own working days — anything not ticked is a weekly off for the people on it
- Week-by-week patterns such as alternate Saturdays
- A shift that ends before it starts runs past midnight, and is one record dated the day it began
Assignment
Dated, per person, with the history kept.

- Back to default hours from a date, with the old shift kept in their history
- The employee is told when their shift changes
- Once anybody is on a shift its days and pattern are locked, so a past month is never judged against changed rules — a new pattern is a new shift

What it does not do

- Shifts are part of HR & Payroll, not a product on its own. There is no shifts-only plan; the price below is the whole module’s, and shifts are switched on for your company on request at no extra cost.
- There is no rostering. Shifts are assigned per person from a date — there is no day-by-day roster, rotation generator or automatic scheduling.
- Assignment is one person at a time. There is no bulk or department-wide assignment.
- Employees cannot request or swap shifts from the app.
- Coverage is today’s check-ins against today’s shifts, not a planning view of next week.
